Sherlock Holmes: The Hidden Years
In 1891Sherlock Holmes, in a struggle with his archenemy, Professor James Moriarty, plunged, supposedly to his death, over Reichenbach Falls. All of England - indeed, the entire world - mourned the irreplaceable loss of the World's Greatest Detective. And that's where, as we all know, things stood until 1894 when Holmes suddenly reappeared in London, revealed himself to Dr. Watson, and resumed his activities as the world's first consulting detective. Holmes remained very quiet and mysterious concerning those nearly three years he was missing, never revealing precisely where he'd been or what he had been doing during those "hidden years." Now, in this anthology of original stories, the truth about those thrity-five months is unveiled. With contributing authors such as Rhys Bowen, Peter Beagle, Carolyn Wheat, Michael Collins and many others, these accounts of Holmes's activities during The Great Hiatus hold for us the accounts of thirteen fascinating adventures. 388 pages, hard cover, dust jacket.

AT LAST! THREE NEW HOLMES MYSTERIES!
The Unusual Sherlock Holmes
We are truly delighted to see this book come from press and we believe that you will be as happy to see it as we are!! Our experience over the years has taught us that Sherlock Holmes fans tend to be devout bibliophiles, and much to our dismay (and yours, we are sure) none of the usual publishers have produced new titles in many months. Sure, in order to try to keep your thirst for Sherlockian reading at least under control, if not actually quenched, we have been able to acquire a few books that we have never offered before, but none of these is actually a newly written and published work. It is, therefore, with considerable pleasure that we are now able to bring you three new Sherlock Holmes novellas under the title of
The Unsusual Sherlock Holmes
!

The individual novellas contained in Jerry Riggs's most recent book are entitled: "The Riddle of the Persian Slipper," The Marvel of the Clockwork Astroglobe," and "The Scarlet Baldrics Mystery" - all original Sherlock Holmes cases. When we first saw Jerry's Persian Slipper in manuscript form, we thought that it was a real "page turner." We were also impressed with Jerry's obvious knowledge of the Canon, his creativity in the weaving of his intriguing plot, and his ability to maintain a convincing Victorian flavor in his prose. Over the ensuing months, we repeatedly encouraged Jerry to pen more Sherlockian cases and, certainly, to pursue publication. The efforts have come to fruition. Jerry is pleased; his publisher is pleased; we are pleased; and we sincerely believe that you will be pleased, too. 369 pages; softback, perfect binding, cover art by the author himself.

Mysteries with a Christmas Twist!
A truly novel Christmas gift for the devoted mystery reader!! This volume contains 32 tales of mystery with settings associated with the Christmas season authored by some of the world's most prominent mystery writers including, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Rex Stout, the legendary Anthony Boucher, Lawrence Block, and ten more famous contributors to the literary mystery genre. Also, look for John Mortimer's Rumpole of the Bailey to make his appearance in two cases which focus on the kindness of the Christmas Spirit. Great mystery reading for curling up in front of the fire after the Christmas fervor has settled down. Hard cover with very attractive dust jacket, 374 pages, edited by Abagail Browning.

Sherlock Holmes and the Disappearing Prince (and other stories)
Noted Crime writer, H.R.F. Keating, who wrote the introduction to this book said of it, ". . . a triumph . . . Sherlock Holmes is present in all his characteristic arrogance and all his inevitability of success". The author of Sherlock Holmes and the Disappearing Prince has been writing since the age of seven and was inspired to create this work when he discovered Doyle's great detective on the shelves of his local public library. His resulting collection of short stories encompasses all of the characteristics lovers of the Baker Street sleuth have come to expect and his plots twist and turn with a mastery that belies his youth. In Sherlock Holmes and the Disappearing Prince, Sherlock Holmes is confronted with four mysteries to solve. The title story is set in the university town of Cambridge and features the Crown Prince of Japan who, apparently, vanished without a trace from his rooms. Soft cover, 100 pages.

Sherlock Holmes and the Ghost of Baker Street
Can you imagine what it would be like to be an American emigre, fleeing the unwelcome attentions of Senator Joseph McCarthy, and taking rooms in Baker Street, only to find those chambers haunted by the ghost of Sherlock Holmes? This book offers a fresh view of Sherlock Holmes, a fascinating picture of the British film and television industry in the early 1950s, a portrait of Orson Welles (with whom the author actually worked and knew well), and a clever murder mystery. All the characters are based on real people - even Greg Hargreaves, our hero, could well be the late Cy Endfield the director of Zulu. Val Andrews wrote Sherlock Holmes pastiches for many years and has more than thirty titles to his credit. Mr. Andrews was at his best when writing about the entertainment world, in which he worked as a performer and writer for more than fifty years. Among his many other credits, Mr. Andrews had been a script writer for Tommy Cooper, Benny Hill and other comedy stars. In addition, he was well known for his biographies of famous stage magicians such as Dante, Murray, Will Goldston, Horace Goldin, Carmo, Kalanag & Chung Ling Soo. Sherlock Holmes and the Ghost of Baker Street is a soft cover book, perfect binding, and contains 156 pages.

Sherlock Holmes and the Boulevard Assassin
Paris! To most Victorian Englishmen the French capital meant wine, women and song. But there were darker aspects to life across the Channel, and it was the assassination of the President in 1894 which took Holmes and Watson to the Continent. The assassin was said to be an anarchist, but was there some yet more sinister force behind the crime? Holmes certainly thought so, believing that he detected the dead hand of an old adversary - Professor Moriarty! And then there was the mysterious Arsene Jupin, the notorious jewel-thief, who positively reveled in publicity. Was Jupin involved, and if so, how? In search of the answers, Holmes was obliged to impersonate himself and also to become a wanted criminal.

New Sherlock Holmes in New York Novel!!
The Adventure of the New York Ripper

In 1893 Terror is walking the streets of New York City at night taking the lives of women in a horrible fashion reminiscent of the heinous murders perpetrated by London's notorious "Jack the Ripper." Is it a "copycat Jack," or is it possible that the infamous murderer, himself, has found his way to the streets of New York?

"Once pretty, perhaps even beautiful to some, she was now barely presentable . . . 'Well sir,' she said to the man who had brought her to that grundgy room, 'Do you want to be getting down to business?' The glint of the candlelight sparkled off the irises of her surprised eyes as they opened wide, a candle's wink of sorts, and then, before she could manage a word or a shout of protest, the cord was about her throat and pulled tight, the nails used as handles to assure the grip would not be lost."

Philip J. Carraher offers another of his Sherlock Holmes in New York series. His previous books include Sherlock Holmes: the Adventure of the Dead Rabbit Society and Alies Simon Hawkes: Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes in New York. Soft cover, 203 pages

Sherlock Holmes and the Plague of Dracula
Our reviewer said, "This is a four-star pastiche! Kudos! Cheers! Bravo!"
Then he went on to say, "There have been a number of 'Sherlock Holmes vs. Dracula' pastiches over the years, but this may be counted as one of the best. It has plot, characterizations, and it keeps one's interest from page 1. It has horror, adventure, politics and even romance. Holmes and Watson travel to Transylvania on a mission. They return to London to break up a villainous plot hatched by Dracula and Moriarty to control the financial resources of the world. Dracula appears in the story as does Professor Van Helsing, Professor Moriarty and of course, old favorites, like Inspector Lestrade. Dr. Watson's wife, Mary, becomes an integral part of the plot, too. I don't wish to give away the ending, but it is a stunner! Parts of the Final Problem and intermixed with parts of The Empty House, but with a new slant. "No one will put the book down especially during the final chapters!"
(Someone asked us recently if our reviewer ever renders a bad review. Actually, he often does, but you never hear about it because we never offer to you any books which he pans!)

Holmes of the Raj
We have imported Holmes of the Raj from India and offer it to you uwith considerable pride. Here is what our reviewer (who, we might add, is not prone to give praise lightly) had to say about the book:. "This is a very charming book. The author tells the adventures of Holmes and Watson in India in a series of interconnected short stories strung together like a string of pearls. Holmes and Watson have been called to India and go with the blessings of The Government. The tales are of politics, blackmail and murder. This book is much better written than a number of pastiches I have read recently and the author provides more of the 'feel' of the original canonical cases. The author has cleverly, and interestingly, interwoven his fiction with real historical events and characters. A skillfully written and entertaining work. It would be a welcomed addition to any Sherlockian library. Highly recommended." It is clear that this author has an extensive knowledge of the Canon as well as Indian, British, and world history. The book contains 211 pages within its rigid binding which has been covered with a multicolored woven cloth imprinted with gold lettering and decoration. The books have actually been hand-bound in a variety of fabric colors and are singular examples of the bookbinders' art (the book you get may not have the same color binding as the one shown here). Only 500 copies of the book have been published! It is a gem of a collectors' item in addition to being a "charming" read.

Ace Lacewing, Bug Detective

Now this is a little (actually, a lot) out of our usual line of books. When we first saw a copy, we couldn't resist it. We suppose that it was originally written for kids, but if you are enough of a k id to have enjoyed "It's a Bug's Life, or "Antz," then we think that you'll find "Ace Lacewing, Bug Detective" a decided pleasure. The book is about 10 inches square, contains 44 pages (we counted , the pages aren't numbered), has a dust jacket and the full-color art work is just terrific!
Here is how the narrative starts :
"It was a night like any other night in the city. Hot and sticky. Great weather if you're a bug. Everyone's a bug in Motham City. some good, some bad. Bad bugs are my business!"
(How could anyone resist this?)
It also makes a great gift for any mystery fan with a sense of humor!!

Sigerson at the Pole

"It wasn't just that it was an incredible house, but that there was a house there at all, sitting cheerily and contented in the midst of the Artic wasteland . . ."

The beginning of an astonishing adventure for "Sigerson" during "The Great Hiatus!"

There are three reasons why you'd want to have this little book. 1) It is a delightful read!; 2) it is an inexpensive and unusual "stocking stuffer" for the Holidays, and 3) it is a great way to introduce very young folk to Sherlock Holmes. Some years ago Ms. Daugherty called this book to our attention. We advertised it and it was sold out almost instantly. We asked Ms. Daugherty for more copies, but alas, it was "out of print" and there were no more. This year, however, she most graciously agreed to allow Classic Specialties to reprint it. We are pleased to have done so. Saddle stitched binding, stiff cardboard cover, only 11 pages, but they are delightful pages.
