Here's what Rolf Gjelsten and Helene Pohl, members of the New Zealand String Quartet, have to say about The Case of the Missing Stradivarius
"Emanuel Garcia's wonderful mystery was completely engrossing, gathering momentum as it closed in on the final concert with all the surrounding shenanigans. From our vantage point as professional musicians, Garcia's meticulous research and attention to detail created a multi-faceted and realistic story. The engaging and entertaining dialogue was full of inside and outside jokes and the Agatha Christie surprise ending was a tour de force."

The Case of the Missing Stradivarius
New from Breese Books!!!

What makes a great violin?
And what makes a great violinist?

When the eccentric but brilliant violinist Donato del Nero arrives in London in 1901 for a concert which he hopes will establish himself as the greatest virtuoso of the age, he discovers that his priceless instrument, the Medici Stradivarius, has been stolen. Only on the Medici, once the secret treasure of Paganini and rumoured to possess near-magical properties as Stradivarius’ masterpiece, has del Nero been able to realise his enormous potential as a peerless genius of the violin. Without it he fears the collapse of his talent. Fortunately Mr. Sherlock Holmes, whose own talents have been languishing since the death of archrival Professor Moriarty and who has been contemplating retirement from criminal detection, is pressed into action. His investigation of the theft becomes simultaneously a fascinating inquiry into the secrets of violin-making and the art of musical interpretation and virtuosity. Erudite and witty, The Case of the Missing Stradivarius is sure to delight players and lovers of music, as well as fans of Conan Doyle's immortal detective. This book is a must for all lovers of Sherlock Holmes and music. It contains an extensive section of notes giving valuable insight into the world of Sherlock Holmes, Stradivarius and the great musicians in general written by an expert in the field. Hard cover with dust jacket, 162 pages, extensive notes and annotations.

Just three of the 100+ fabulous locations you'll visit in Midsomer Murders on Location!!
Midsomer Murders on Location
For those who might not know, Midsomer Murders is a British TV series. The mixture of classic "whodunnit," bizarre characters, storylines that often have a twist (or sting) in the tail as well as a troupe of very talented actors has brought the series a loyal fan-following around the globe. Now, our friend, Antony Richards, has brought to publication this "guide book" to various locations, in the English countryside, which provided settings important to episodes of Midsomer Murders.

The majority of the pretty villages that make up the fictional Midsomer county are, in reality, strewn over four counties – Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire. Here for the first time is a comprehensive guide to the gorgeous locations used in filming the series. From Aldbury to Windsor, this book, published in conjunction with the Midsomer Murders Society, surveys over one hundred of these picturesque locations, complete with filming anecdotes. However, it concentrates primarily on the historical aspects of each site, most of which are now open to the public and worth visits in their own right. The guide is fully indexed by geographical location and episode. Midsomer Murders on Location is extensively illustrated and contains maps to assist the readers in planning their own visit. 90 pages, soft cover, perfect binding, 100+ photographs of mansions, cottages, castles, pubs, etc., (complete with maps) all lying in the towns and villages of Midsomer county. The authors have provided striking descriptions and colorful histories of each location. (The location photos in the Midsomer Murders on Location book are printed in B&W)
This book is a must for all Midsomer Murders enthusiasts as well as being a fascinating guide for anyone interested in visiting (whether in fact, or only vicariously) some of Britain's finest countryside locations . We are informed that the book is fully endorsed by Bentley Productions.

Not to worry, this book has nothing to do with one of Mr. Holmes's more objectionable personal habits! The "Morphine Gambit" was a polical move made by an international committee in an attempt to deal with the narcotics trade of the early 20th century.
The Newest volume from Britain's Breese Books!
Sherlock Holmes and the Morphine Gambit
Breese Books' publisher described this Sherlock Holmes pastiche as, "My favorite."
It is February, 1912. Sherlock Holmes is called out of retirement by his brother, Mycroft, who is acting on the behalf of the British Government. The younger Holmes is to investigate an apparent burglary at the Norfolk home of a wealthy German financier. What appears to be a simple case soon evolves into the dismantling of a German spy ring, but the inves-tigation becomes clouded by suspicions concerning Mycroft's role in the events. What secret agenda is Mycroft Holmes pursuing? What is the truth behind the mysterious loss of the fishing vessles the Misty Jane and the Yarmouth Adventuress in the North Sea? Before the investigation is complete, events crystalize to reveal a conspiracy, which could the very existence of The Empire, in the months leading up to the First World War. A peerless new volume from The Sound of the Baskervilles!!
No matter what aspect of the Sherlockian hobby interests you, this really neat new book will keep you entertained, informed, interested, and involved for months, perhaps years, to come!
THIS IS SIMPLY A GREAT BOOK! Here is how it works. The Sound of the Baskervilles is the Sherlockian scion society located in the "greater Puget Sound area" (get it? the SOUND of the Baskervilles). In 1983 they decided that, in addition to their monthly newsletter, they needed a special publication for the Holiday Season, hence, Beaten's Christmas Annual was born. This annual "journal" was devoted to the publication of the works of their society's members and those of their friends. This year, the Sound of the Baskervilles (they affectionately call themselves SOBs) decided to pick the "best" material from their 25 years of publication and to publish them in this single volume. The contributions include short pastiches, commentaries, quizes, dialogues, puzzles, photos, graphics, etc. Here is what we think to be the greatest endorsement - when we received this book today and I started browsing through it just to find
out what I could tell you about it and I found myself spending over two hours as my attention was attracted by one interesting feature after another! I simply had difficulty putting it down! I think that you might find yourselves plagued with the same problem! Soft cover, neat cover graphics, perfect binding, 290 pages. Our "SOB" friends Terri and David Haugen have kindly allowed us to purchase a few copies of this book to offer to you. We hope that we can get more when these are gone. One thing is for sure, we will sell one fewer than we received because we will definitely keep a copy of this one for ourselves!

Sherlock Holmes: Mostly Parodies
by
Tracy J. Revels
Tracy Revels is a long time member of Greenville, SC's scion, the Survivors of the Gloria Scott. As such, she has been a regular contributor to that scion's newsletter, "The Gaslight Gazette" with her clever and well written short contributions to the body of Sherlockian literature. We have been nagging her for years to publish her work via a vehicle that would allow her a larger readership; in her characteristic modesty, she was reluctant to do so. Finally, through our urging, combined with that of David Milner, editor of "The Gaslight Gazette," Tracy finally consented to providing a manuscript. Because this is our first attempt at a publication via CafePress, we fear that our inexperience delayed publication for another several months. Nonetheless, the book is now here and contains over two-dozen of Tracy's literary creations, which she says are, "mostly parodies," hence, the title of the book (there are a couple of her works which we think qualify as pastiches, though). Tracy draws on her extensive knowledge of the Sherlockian Canon, and her remarkable wit to create really funny, but entirely plausible, Sherlockian anecdotes; it is a rare time that we read another piece of her handiwork and don't find ourselves actually in tears from laughing! We have been able to pull Tracy's work together in this single volume through the facilities of our on-demand printer partner, CafePress - without CafePress, we fear that it would have been much more difficult to bring this book to you. Dr. Revels' book is for all among us who enjoy the fun of the Sherlockian hobby, it is a pleasure to find such a combination of erudition and lightheartedness in one book;
it really is a fun book!

Sherlock Holmes and the Three Poisoned Pawns
(A triolgy of three novellas bound in a single cover!)
Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of Hamlet
Sherlock Holmes and the Belgravian Letter
Sherlock Holmes and the Highcliffe Invitation

A poisoned pawn, in chess, is any pawn which, if captured, would lead to a serious disadvantage for that player. Here are three new cases for Sherlock Holmes. In each case, someone, or something, which at first seemed trivial, evolves into something far more sinister! The first such problem is written by Emanuel E. Garcia, the author of numerous scholarly articles on psychoanalysis. Here his writing is inspired by a novel interpretation of Hamlet, in which the author reveals, for the first time, just who is the real power behind the throne in Denmark! Roger Jaynes is an established author with two other published Sherlock Holmes novels to his credit. His contribution to The Three Poisoned Pawns concerns Sir Arthur Wilcox, a high-ranking civil servant. Sir Arthur is about to embark on a diplomatic mission of the utmost importance to Athens. However, when his body is discovered close to his open safe, it is feared that the Government may fall; Sherlock Holmes to the rescue! Finally, Eddie Maguire tells the strange tale of a seemingly innocent weekend invitation to Dorset at which Holmes and Watson meet the Kaiser. Soon some of the Kaiser’s personal possessions go missing and what appears to be a simple matter of theft, culminates in a possible assassination plot.

This is a truly beautiful book!
The Quintessential Sherlock Holmes
The publisher tells us that this volume is designed "by collectors for collectors." Not only does its leather binding, gold embossed front coverand spine, gilt edged pages and fabulous ship cover adorned with original Sherlockian drawings make it a most attractive addition to any Sherlockian's bookshelf, but it is really good reading, too. The Quintessential Sherlock Holmes contains five original yarns by the Edgar Award winning author, Richard Boyer, i.e., "The Walton Water Horror," "The Adventure of Zolnay, the Aerialist," "The Adventure of Bell Rock Light," "The Adventure of the Eyrie Cliff," and the full-length novel, The Giant Rat of Sumatra. We forecast that this book will be a coveted collectors' item in years to come but right now, it will provide hours of pleasant Sherlockian reading. We have a very limited number of copies. 500 pages on the highest quality archival paper, plus a red satin ribbon so that you can mark your place conveniently and with style. Need we mention that this would make a great gift for your favorite Sherlockian bibliophile!?

The 22nd Man
The legendary Sherlockian and most prolific writer, David Hammer, builds on the observation that no one has ever identified Mr. Holmes retirement cottage on the South Downs. The author belives this to be the case because Mr. Holmes was never there! It is Mr. Hammer's contention that Mr. Holmes spent the years, after he vanished from sight, in 1914 in Germany. The 22nd Man is an account of Mr. Hammer's personal odyssey in pursuit of information necessary to the substantiation of his view. Mr. Hammer documents his account with a substantial collection of most interesting photographs. Enjoyment of the heated exchange of comments between the author and eminent Sherlockian, Jon Lellenberg, contained between these covers is, in itself, worth the price of the book! It would be something of an understatement to say that Mr. Lellenberg took exception to the thesis which Mr. Hammer puts forth in this book. Soft cover, perfect binding, 125 pages, numerous photographs.

The Quest
The Quest is subtitled "Being the Search for the Treasure of Sherlock Holmes, the 22nd Man" and is a continuation of the author's sojourn to trace the trail of Mr. Shelrock Holmes in Europe after WWI. This book, as was the case with its predecessor, is a well documented account of the author's journey and, as the name would imply, his quest. The specific "quest" followed in this volume is for "lost Sherlockian manuscripts" which are suggested to be in existence in The 22nd Man. Again, the author provides the reader with copious photos documenting The Quest. An intriguing mystery story that carries the reader along with the author in his Quest. Soft cover, perfect binding, 125 pages, copious photographs.

Sherlock Holmes and the Ghost of Baker Street
Can you imagine what it would be like to be an American emigre, fleeing the unwelcome attentions of Senator Joseph McCarthy, and taking rooms in Baker Street, only to find those chambers haunted by the ghost of Sherlock Holmes? This book offers a fresh view of Sherlock Holmes, a fascinating picture of the British film and television industry in the early 1950s, a portrait of Orson Welles (with whom the author actually worked and knew well), and a clever murder mystery. All the characters are based on real people - even Greg Hargreaves, our hero, could well be the late Cy Endfield the director of Zulu. Val Andrews wrote Sherlock Holmes pastiches for many years and has more than thirty titles to his credit. Mr. Andrews was at his best when writing about the entertainment world, in which he worked as a performer and writer for more than fifty years. Among his many other credits, Mr. Andrews had been a script writer for Tommy Cooper, Benny Hill and other comedy stars. In addition, he was well known for his biographies of famous stage magicians such as Dante, Murray, Will Goldston, Horace Goldin, Carmo, Kalanag & Chung Ling Soo. Sherlock Holmes and the Ghost of Baker Street is a soft cover book, perfect binding, and contains 156 pages.

Sherlock Holmes and the Boulevard Assassin
Paris! To most Victorian Englishmen the French capital meant wine, women and song. But there were darker aspects to life across the Channel, and it was the assassination of the President in 1894 which took Holmes and Watson to the Continent. The assassin was said to be an anarchist, but was there some yet more sinister force behind the crime? Holmes certainly thought so, believing that he detected the dead hand of an old adversary - Professor Moriarty! And then there was the mysterious Arsene Jupin, the notorious jewel-thief, who positively reveled in publicity. Was Jupin involved, and if so, how? In search of the answers, Holmes was obliged to impersonate himself and also to become a wanted criminal.

Sherlock Holmes and the Egyptian Hall Adventure
This Sherlock Holmes adventure unites magic and mystery, and answers the question of why Houdini's coffin may be empty!
Here is another wonderful Sherlock Holmes a pastiche from the prolific pen of Val Andrews. The author has a vast knowledge of conjuring and of Sherlockiana and in this exciting mystery he is able to combine both of his lifelong interests. The Egyptian Hall, Maskelyne's theatre of mystery, forms the perfect backdrop for this the most exciting and unusual adventure ever embarked upon by the famous sleuth and his faithful Boswell, Dr Watson. The loss of an article of great value - the property of a titled lady - by a conjurer during the course of a stage trick is but the prelude to intrigue, mystery and murder most foul. But hush we can say no more ... the game is afoot! Be sure that you are fully prepared for adventure before jumping into a hansom and returning to an age when the old Queen was still upon her throne and the fogs swirled through Baker Street.

Sherlock Holmes and the Plague of Dracula
Our reviewer said, "This is a four-star pastiche! Kudos! Cheers! Bravo!"
Then he went on to say, "There have been a number of 'Sherlock Holmes vs. Dracula' pastiches over the years, but this may be counted as one of the best. It has plot, characterizations, and it keeps one's interest from page 1. It has horror, adventure, politics and even romance. Holmes and Watson travel to Transylvania on a mission. They return to London to break up a villainous plot hatched by Dracula and Moriarty to control the financial resources of the world. Dracula appears in the story as does Professor Van Helsing, Professor Moriarty and of course, old favorites, like Inspector Lestrade. Dr. Watson's wife, Mary, becomes an integral part of the plot, too. I don't wish to give away the ending, but it is a stunner! Parts of the Final Problem and intermixed with parts of The Empty House, but with a new slant. "No one will put the book down especially during the final chapters!"
(Someone asked us recently if our reviewer ever renders a bad review. Actually, he often does, but you never hear about it because we never offer to you any books which he pans!)

Ace Lacewing, Bug Detective

Now this is a little (actually, a lot) out of our usual line of books. When we first saw a copy, we couldn't resist it. We suppose that it was originally written for kids, but if you are enough of a k id to have enjoyed "It's a Bug's Life, or "Antz," then we think that you'll find "Ace Lacewing, Bug Detective" a decided pleasure. The book is about 10 inches square, contains 44 pages (we counted , the pages aren't numbered), has a dust jacket and the full-color art work is just terrific!
Here is how the narrative starts :
"It was a night like any other night in the city. Hot and sticky. Great weather if you're a bug. Everyone's a bug in Motham City. some good, some bad. Bad bugs are my business!"
(How could anyone resist this?)
It also makes a great gift for any mystery fan with a sense of humor!!

Sigerson at the Pole

"It wasn't just that it was an incredible house, but that there was a house there at all, sitting cheerily and contented in the midst of the Artic wasteland . . ."

The beginning of an astonishing adventure for "Sigerson" during "The Great Hiatus!"

There are three reasons why you'd want to have this little book. 1) It is a delightful read!; 2) it is an inexpensive and unusual "stocking stuffer" for the Holidays, and 3) it is a great way to introduce very young folk to Sherlock Holmes. Some years ago Ms. Daugherty called this book to our attention. We advertised it and it was sold out almost instantly. We asked Ms. Daugherty for more copies, but alas, it was "out of print" and there were no more. More recently, however, she most graciously agreed to allow Classic Specialties to reprint it. We are pleased to have done so. Saddle stitched binding, stiff cardboard cover, only 11 pages, but they are delightful pages.
