Dear
friends of Sherlock Holmes:
You are receiving this communication because you have either purchased something from us, requested a catalog, or otherwise done business with us in the recent past. The Sherlockian E-Times will contain Sherlockian news, announcements, features and will also call attention to a subset of new Sherlockian products which we feel might be of interest to you.. We would very much appreciate hearing from you concerning your reaction to this new method of communication. Just click here to access our pre-addressed e-mail form. BTW, if you find something you'd like to purchase, but don't want to buy on line, we do have a option should you wish no longer to receive our E-Times (we hope this never happens!) - just click here to conjure up our pre-addressed e-mail form and just put "unsubscribe" toll-free telephone number through which you can place an order for anything we have. The number is 877-233-3823. Or, you can always write to us at Classic Specialties; PO Box 19058; Cincinnati, OH 45219. As always, you have the "opt out" in the subject line. Carolyn and Joel Senter BTW: For folks who have not subscribed to the E-Times, a copy of this issue can be seen at <http://www.sherlock-holmes.com/e_times07-5.htm>. Tell your non-subscribing friends! | ||

Dear Friends and subscrbers:
Please forgive us for missing the April edition of your Sherlockian E-Times.Since we last spoke to you, we have had a COLOSSAL computer crash here! Our main desktop computer just died early one morning and refused to resurrect! Fortunately, we had pretty good backups, but, unfortunately, the backups were not perfect. We lost a few of our subscribers' email addresses - the ones which we had most recently acquired, so, if you happen to know anyone who expected to receive this edition but who didn't, please have them email us so that we can put their edresses back on our list. One of the items we lost in the crash was the mailing program we use to transmit the E-times to you. We had to find a new one and try to get it up and running. If you receive this E-Times, the program is working!! In addition, our local SMTP server has been on the blink, too. We had one ecorrespondent who complained that he received eight copies of the same message from us and other correspondents apparently failed to receive any messages from us. Telephone calls to the server engendered a recorded telephone message informing us that they knew about the problems and were working to fix them. If you receive this copy of your E-Times, the SMPT server has also come back to life!! |

YOUR CHANCE FOR IMMORTALITY! (sort of)
We are considering putting together a Sherlockian desk calendar for 2008. You know, one with important canonical or Doylean dates and/or trivia questions. We thought that we would like to do something that has never been done before, i.e., add notations of the birthdays of "rank and file" Sherlockians with whom it has been our pleasure to communicate over the years. If you think you'd like your name and birthday appended to the calendar, just email us and let us know (we plan to do only the the month and day - keep the year to yourself!!). We don't know if we can pull this off, or not. Various problems (not the least of which might be cost) could well scuttle our plans, but we would like to give it a try. What say? |

CORRECTION: Last month we gave erroneous guidance
to folks interested in membership matters re: The Sherlock Holmes

SHSL should be addressed to Bob Ellis at <SHSL221b@aol.com>.

We are pleased to announce the induction of a new
member as a Knight of the Scheming Minds, the society for chess-playing
Sherlockians. Chicago's Bill Sawisch became a member by undergoing the
induction ritual of completing one game against an existing member.
Bill competed against Scheming Mind Don Izban. It is not our policy
to report on the outcome of such games.

Through the facilities of CafePress we are able to offer a much wider variety

This
is the final volume of Mr. Klinger's legendary Sherlock Holmes Reference
Library series. In this volume Mr. Klinger presents his astounding commentary
and annotation of the cases originally collected in The Case-Book of Sherlock
Holmes, viz., (ILLU, BLAN, MAZA, 3GAB, SUSS, 3GAR, THOR, CREE, LION, VEIL, SHOS,
and RETI). Owners of the previous volumes in this series will not have to
be told of the amazing scope and depth of Mr. Klinger's annotations, footnotes,
and elaborations. These volumes constitute a true education in the literature
and the adventure which is the Sherlock Holmes Canon. Volume nine completes the
Sherlock Holmes Reference Library - possibly the most indispensible
set of volumes for any Sherlockian's bookshelf. Please click

A Little History of The Hansom Wheels
Rev. E. Wayne Wall, BSI, (aka "Holy Peters") "founded" The Hansom Wheels in the early 1970's, and, for a while, was the sole member. In 1977 he joined with Dr. G. B. Lane of the University of South Carolina music department. Using the pseudonym Dr. John H Watson, Rev. Wall took on the scionic title of The Hub; G.B. became Col. Sebastian Moran and occupied the office of Commissionaire. The "organizational meeting" was held in the Music Building of the University of South Carolina on April 14, 1977; this inaugural meeting attracted some twenty, or so, Sherlockians from the Columbia area. Regular meetings of The Hansom Wheels began on May 19, 1977 at the Celebrity Club, Don Mankowski was appointed Official Quizmaster and Bob Robinson Program Chairman. With occasional venue changes, the organization then met each month for the next six years. Since then the meetings have been generally held on the third Thursday of each even-numbered month. The organization's newsletter, The Pink 'Un, named for the racing form mentioned in The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle, initially was written and distributed by The Hub. After a few years, Phil Dematteis assumed this literary honor; a position which he continues to occupy to the present day. Bill Brown, who had become Quizmaster when Prof. Mankowski moved to Florida, retired last year and was replaced by the sister-and-sister team of Marcia Rowen and Kathy Trice. Kathy had attended the initial meeting at USC and for many years had handled the finances of the organization. Many of the original scholarly papers which were presented before The Hansom Wheels subsequently have appeared in such prestigious Sherlockian publications as The Baker Street Journal, The Baker Street Miscellany, The Serpentine Muse, The Sherlock Holmes Journal, and The Holmes and Watson Report. For each of the past twenty-one years, the December meeting has featured the production of one of Dr. Watson's accounts as adapted for the stage by Bob Robinson. In addition, it has become a tradition at mid-summer to feature an original Sherlockian parody written for the radio by Bill Brown. Today the bi-monthly The Pink 'Un enjoys a circulation to approximately eighty subscribers. Most meetings are attended by anywhere from fifteen to forty-five harmless eccentrics. We believe The Hansom Wheels to be one of the most successful and active Sherlock Holmes societies in the entire world. The Hansom Wheels' web site is at <http://www.capnbilly.com/hansomwheels.htm> |

We take a lot of pictures at
various Sherlockian gatherings and share many of them with you. But
you seldom see photos of us, the publishers of your E-Times. That's
because we are usually the ones taking the pictures! Our friend, Gord
Shriver from Atlanta, was with us at the Dayton Sherlock Holmes/ACD
Symposium last month and took this shot of us in the act of enjoying
the Symposium. At the risk of appearing egotistical, we are publishing
Gord's photo here. Thanks much, Gord.

We are saddened to report that Father David Devore,
active Catholic priest and member of our local Tankerville Club, passed
beyond Reichenbach on March 24, 2007. Fr. Devore had been suffering
from heart ailments for some years. One of Father Devore's favorite
authors was C. S. Lewis whose words were quoted at the Father's Mass,
"We cannot mingle with the splendors we see, but all the leaves
of the New Testament are rustling with the rumor that it will not always
be so . . . The door on which we have been knocking all our lives will
open at last." The Father was interred in the cemetery at The
Abbey of Gethsemani Trappist Monestary near Bardstown Kentucky.

We have been informed by our Chicago friends of
the passing beyond Reichenbach, on March 30, 2007, of Dr. Ely Liebow,
whom we had the pleasure of meeting on several occasions at Chicago
area Sherlockian gatherings. Dr. Liebow taught literature at Northeastern
University for more than forty years. He was well known as the author
of the first full length biography of Dr. Joseph Bell, a 19th century
surgeon whose students included Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Dr. Doyle
acknowledged Bell as one of the models for his character, Sherlock
Holmes, based on the real doctor's remarkable powers of observation
and deduction. Dr. Liebow's book, Dr. Joe Bell: Model for Sherlock
Holmes was first published in 1982. It was re-published earlier
this year by the University of Wisconsin Press. Dr. Liebow was an
invested member of The Baker Street Irregulars ("Inspector Gregory").
He was the recipient of the BSI "Two Shilling Award" in 1991. He
was a member of the Hounds of the Baskerville (sic), Hugo's Companions,
the Baker Street Pages as well as other Chicago area scions. Dr
Liebow's contributions to the Sherlockian Community will be greatly
missed. Our sincere condolences to his friends and family.

After a rather formidable winter season in Southern Ohio, The Earth Abides!! Spring in southern Ohio (at last!)! |

We would like to share with you an odd set of happenings.
Just last week Carolyn was delighted to have received an email from
Pam Holmer. Pam Holmer (nee Lorenz) was a college chum of Carolyn's
with whom she has had no contact for over 30 years! For whatever
reason, Pam googled us and our web site popped up! (Hurray for the Internet!)
Here is a photo she sent of herself and her husband, Ron. To add to
this odd item, last week, the vicissitudes of chance led Joel to encounter
(on the same day) two of his former university colleagues with whom
he had had no contact for a couple of decades. It would appear that
the Zeitgeist has been favoring "old home week" for us recently.

We
appreciate your readership very much. Thanks a million! Carolyn and Joel |
