HELP?
Here is an item for your consideration. This year we thought that we'd make our 2010 calendar using likenesses of The Hound for the graphic for each month. We searched and found that we couldn't locate 12 (preferably 13 - one for the cover) likenesses of The Hound suitable for publication on a calendar, so we had pretty much abandoned the idea of doing a 2010 calendar. When Chris Robertson, over in St. Louis, read our announcement in the "Baker Street Bulletin," she had a couple of suggestions. First, since she knew fellow Sherlockians who had, at one time, "disguised" their own pets to resemble their ideas of The Hound, we wondered if there might be others among our Sherlockian subscribers who might have done the same thing and, possibly, collectively, we could assemble enough photos of "pet Hounds" to fill a calendar. Also, Chris wondered if there might be talented Sherlockian artists among you who could produce properly terrifying drawings of The Hound to suit the purpose of a 2010 Sherlockian Calendar. What say you about either idea, anyone?

ATTENTION!
New Book!
We don't have the opportunity to do this often!

We are almost never able to offer Sherlockian books published by major commercial publishers, but because we thought that "Dust and Shadow" was such an exceptional pastiche, we approached Simon and Schuster and were pleased that we were able to get a few copies to offer to you here.
Butch Turbert calls Dust and Shadow
" . . .an excellent pastiche."

Sherlock Holmes: Return to the Musgrave Ritual

This is Mr. Riggs' second Sherlockian pastiche. Many of you will remember his The Unusual Sherlock Holmes which was published a few months ago. Most reviews we have seen suggest that Mr. Riggs' new pastiche is even better than his first. Mr. Riggs, who is a long-time scout leader, got his start in pastiche writing by spinning Sherlockian tales to his scouts around the campfire. He once told us that he knew he was onto something when he observed counselors from other camp sites silently creeping around his campfire to listen in on the latest episode of Mr. Riggs' tale. He is a devoted proponent of the original principles of scouting, which he calls "Sherlocking" (See, Hear, Examine, Read, Learn, Observe Conclude, and Know).

We have just received our first shipment of Sherlock Holmes: Return to the Musgrave Ritual directly from the publisher!

Folks listening to the Diane Rehm show on NPR on May 20, might have heard her interview re: The Hound of the Baskervilles, with the eminent Sherlockian, Peter Blau (along with Carla Coupe and Daniel Stashower) . The program was aired in honor of Sir Arthur's birthday. We have not yet done it ourselves, but we are told that you can actually listen to a re-play of the interview by going to http://wamu.org/programs/dr/09/05/20.php#26166, and clicking your choice of audio players under "listen to this segment." If you try this link, please let us know if it works. While mentioning Mr. Blau, we might also mention his newsletter, "Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press." Subscriptions can be had by contacting Mr. Blau.

The gentleman to your left is Nis Jessen.
Mr. Jessen is an outstanding artist from Denmark. The remarkable quality of his work can be seen from the small segment of his work displayed on the wall behind him. Well, to get to the point, Mr. Jessen has created a most remarkable illustrated version of A Study in Scarlet. The text of the book is the original Doyle narrative, but each page is illustrated with original Jessen drawings created to depict the actions, locations, or situations described in the prose offered on that page. If you will go to our web site's "general book" page (Click Here) and scroll down just a few inches, you'll find a little additional description of the book, another picture of Mr. Jessen, and a link through which you may order copies of Mr. Jessen's illustrated STUD.

One reason Victorians seemed like a happy lot!

We don't know how many neophytes to the Sherlockian Community we have met over the years who were shocked to discover that Mr. Holmes occasionally resorted, when bored, to the injection of his "7% solution." We think that one really needs to evaluate all observations in the context of their temporal setting. To the right are two advertisements for Mariani wine. Vin Mariani (as it was called in France) was very popular in its day, even among royalty such as Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland. Pope Leo XIII and later Pope Pius X were both Vin Mariani drinkers. Pope Leo awarded a Vatican gold medal to the wine, and also appeared on a poster endorsing it! Vin Mariani was made from Bordeaux wine treated with coca leaves. The ethanol in the wine acted as a solvent and extracted the cocaine from the coca leaves, considerably altering the drink’s effect. This "tonic" was created around 1863 and was in common use during the Victorian period. Its existence demonstrates what the accepted attitude toward cocaine seems to have been during Mr. Holmes's time. (Thanks to Wikipedia for this information.)(BTW, Roy Pilot, a pharmacist and BSI, presented a discussion of Vin Mariani at the Dayton Symposium a couple of years ago.)

Our fellow Illustrious Client (of Indianapolis), Steve Doyle, has assumed the responsibility of being the new publisher of The Baker Street Journal! .

BTW, those of you who read our Baker Street Bulletins will know that we ran a little contest and offered a prize to anyone (BSI's not eligible, of course) who could identify those guys on the cover (designed by the new publisher, Steve Doyle). We have a winner in our fellow "Scheming Minder" Jason Kirkfield who identified Christopher Morley, H.W. Bell, Vincent Starrett, Basil Davenport, Gene Tunney, William Gillette, Alexander Woollcott. Good show, Jason. (And, you might ask, "why should I care about these guys?" If you don't know, and are curious, please email us and ask.

Mentioning our friends at the Sounds of the Baskervilles in Seattle (below) reminds us to mention their great, informative and fun newsletter, "Ineffable Twaddle." If you'd like a subscription, we invite you to CLICK HERE to contact Terri and David to arrange for a subscription.

We had sold completely out of this great book from Seattle's The Sound of the Baskervilles scion, but Terri and David Haugen kindly shipped us more copies to replenish our supply.

We still have a few copies of the popular:

Sherlock Holmes and the Plague of Dracula

Please

lague of Dracula
Just a word or two about Sherlock Holmes and the Plague of Dracula. We think (and this has been confirmed by conversation with other Sherlockians) that there is something of a prejudice against "just another Sherlock Holmes vs Dracula book" (Ho Hum!); we must confess to having been influenced by this prejudice, ourselves!. This book, however, has gotten really good reviews and we have heard nothing but good things about it. If you haven't tried it, we do suggest it to your attention. You know that we always have a liberal refund policy should you be unhappy with any of our products.

Marcy Mahle, active member of Dayton's Agra Treasurers, made these absolutely beautiful "Holmes and Irene" dolls replete in proper costumes which she, personally, hand made. After the Symposium closed, Marcy still had a few of these magnificant collectible items left and told us that it would be OK for us to call these to your attention. Anyone interested in purchasing these dolls is invited to CLICK HERE to visit our "Collectibles" page and, if you scroll down to the very bottom of the page, you'll find the link through which you can email Marcy directly to make arrangements. These would make outstanding additions to any Sherlockian's collector shelves. (BTW, Click Here to visit our "Sherlockian Persons, Places, and Things" page then click on the Dayton Sherlock Holmes/ACD Symposium.)

Recently our supplier in the UK called to advise us that he had found a forgotten supply of this packet of 32 postcard-sized photos of Mr. Jeremy Brett, Mr. David Burke, Mr. Edward Hardwicke, and other stars and scenes taken from the actual set of the famous Granada TV series seen in the US on Public TV and, more recently, on A&E Network. We had these photos for you a few years ago, and were told that the supply had been exhausted. Then, our British supplier informed us that he had an additional supply. We bought all we could afford and, now, we are pleased to again be able to offer them to you again, as many of you requested.
