Something new on Jack the Ripper? Detective Inspector Edmund Reid, head of the Whitechapel detective force, led his men in a relentless pursuit of the Whitechapel Murderer throughout the horrific series of slayings which spanned the years 1888 to 1891. After his retirement in 1896, Reid often reminisced on his involvement in the great investigation, addressing all the theories as to the identity of Jack the Ripper that were aired during his lifetime.

    Jack the Ripper Walk
In the East End of London, during 1888, there were a series of horrendous murders. At least five women, all of whom were prostitutes, were horribly murdered and their bodies mutilated. The police named him "Jack theRipper." "Jack" was never caught. Theories about the Ripper's identity continue to abound and rumors have been circulated even connecting the Royal Family to these gruesome murders. This vicarious walk will guide you through the century-old streets of Whitechapel, to six of the original "Jack the Ripper" murder sites. You will "visit" the actual taverns that "Jack" frequented, which will include the famous Ten Bells Pub where in 1888, the Ripper's unfortunate victuimes drank and worked as prostitutes. Whether you are going to London, or not, this book - the one actually used by tour guides in London for use in conjunction with their live tours live tours - is fascinating .

    Mrs. Hudson? . . . Mrs. HUDSON!
This is the script of a splendid play, by the late James Moss Cardwell and published, posthumously, by Dr. George Vanderburgh, in a colorful, hardback volume most excellently suited for the bibliophile's bookshelf. It is a fascinating offering, full of humor, pathos, and clever dialog. Imagine this - Mrs. Hudson isn't the dowdy, plump, subservient landlady we have all been led to believe, but, rather, she is (as cast in this play by none other than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, himself) an attractive, 34-year-old widow who is is finished mourning her late husband after 12 years and has enough spunk to bash Jack the Ripper with her umbrella! An interesting read and a rapidly vanishing collectors' item! Illustrations by Jean Pierre Cagnat; introduction by Michael Kean, 140 pages, most attractive dust jacket

DEEPER SHADES: THE DRESSING-GOWNS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE PSYCHOLOGY OF COLOR
    Photo of Deeper Shades Cover

DESCRIPTION: Bill Mason has been a Sherlockian scholar and friend of Classic Specialties for quite some time now. He communicated with us to call his unusual monograph to our attention. After seeing his work, we were convinced that the Sherlockian Community would be interested in his eclectic observations and analyses. Mr. Mason discusses, for us 21st century Colonials, the concept of the "Dressing-Gowns" and its role in Victorian life. Additionally, the author analyzes Mr. Holmes' use, not only of the "dressing-gown," but on the reasons for his selections of the various colors of the the garments mentioned in the Canon! Such chapters as "The Tranquil Blue of Meditation," "The Authority of Purple," and "Gray versus Mouse" expose his analyses of the psychological impact and influence which Mr. Holmes wielded through the selection of dressing gown colors. We preceive Mr. Mason's work to be an interesting analysis of a heretofore unexplored aspect of Mr. Holmes' wardrobe! Soft cover with Paget graphics, saddle stitched binding, 44 pages.

    Anatomically, My dear Watson
    Cover of Anatomically
Body parts in the Canon? What began as an interesting scholarly endeavor evolved into this book which now can be shared with the entire Sherlockian Community. "Bud" Livingston, the author of Anatomically, My dear Watson reviewed the entire Canon looking for reference made to various body parts. He then identified each character for whom any body part had been described, collected those descriptions, and coalesced all of them into "anatomical categories" which, eventually, became chapters for his book. His monographs were so well received at local scions that he continued his search of body parts! What characters had "feverish" cheeks; who had "sallow" cheeks; and who had red checks to match his nose!? Mr. Livingston treats each anatomical body part mentioned in the Canon by identifying the character and the nature of the body part so described! Mr. Livingston's book is certainly a completely new approach to canonical analysis. It is an interesting and entertaining "read" and can serve as a reference book with the canonical characters classified in a most unusual way. Softback, 60 pages, index.

    The Illustrious Clients' Second Case-Notes

Possibly the best way to describe this newest production from this talented and creative Indianapolis scion, The Illustrious Clients, is to quote a review given by Roger Johnson, the editor of The District Messenger, the monthly newsletter of The Sherlock Holmes Society of London.

"The Illustrious of Indianapolis have long been noted for their excellent and varied collections of essays, beginning with The Illustrious Clients Casebook in 1947. Now comes The Illustrious Clients Second Case-Notes, edited by Steven T. Doyle and Mark A. Gagen. the cream of this 94-page paperback is a trio of essays on Holmes's character by Pamela Wampler, Steven Doyle and Patricia Ward, followed closely by Donald Curtis's diagnosis of 'The Musgrave Ritual' and Paul Herbert's observations on 'The Priory School.' Verses, puzzles and a sprinkling of lighter articles make up the rest of this stimulating volume."
