Special Winter 2007-2008 Direct Order - Books
Your friends at Classic Specialties will be on hiatus in climates warmer than Ohio until about the first of March (who wouldn't if they could?). Since we won't be around to ship your Sherlockian goodies from our facility, we have made arrangements with some of our suppliers to ship products directly to you. When you order any items on this page our supplier will ship the book(s) you want directly to you.
During our hiatus, you may, of course, order any product from our partner manufacturer, CafePress (click here), which are always shipped dircetly to you, anyway. You may, in fact, also still order from any of the regular pages on our web site, and our system will save your order, but we won't be able to deliver those items until after March 1.
BTW: The cost of shipping and handing has been included by our suppliers for items on this page, hence, no additional shipping charges will be added.

Ladies, Ladies: The Women in the Life of Sherlock Holmes

The women who visited 221b Baker Street were more than merely stereotyped facades of women of their era. These ladies who visited the famous digs included those with love interests, femmes fatales, independent career women, or even women of noble station. Their situations faithfully mirrored the changes and challenge real women faced during the nearly half century during which The Famous Detective's cases where being published. This illuminating and entertaining anthology of original commentaries, British music hall ditties, other historical glimpses entertains topics from libations to libido, perfumes to prejudice and all in a context which could well have colored Sherlock Holmes's cases. It is an informative and entertaining journey through the cultural landscape facing the women of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. 133 pages, soft cover, perfect binding.

AT LAST! THREE NEW HOLMES MYSTERIES!
The Unusual Sherlock Holmes
We are truly delighted to see this book come from press and we believe that you will be as happy to see it as we are!! Our experience over the years has taught us that Sherlock Holmes fans tend to be devout bibliophiles, and much to our dismay (and yours, we are sure) none of the usual publishers have produced new titles in many months. Sure, in order to try to keep your thirst for Sherlockian reading at least under control, if not actually quenched, we have been able to acquire a few books that we have never offered before, but none of these is actually a newly written and published work. It is, therefore, with considerable pleasure that we are now able to bring you three new Sherlock Holmes novellas under the title of
The Unsusual Sherlock Holmes
!

The individual novellas contained in Jerry Riggs's most recent book are entitled: "The Riddle of the Persian Slipper," The Marvel of the Clockwork Astroglobe," and "The Scarlet Baldrics Mystery" - all original Sherlock Holmes cases. When we first saw Jerry's Persian Slipper in manuscript form, we thought that it was a real "page turner." We were also impressed with Jerry's obvious knowledge of the Canon, his creativity in the weaving of his intriguing plot, and his ability to maintain a convincing Victorian flavor in his prose. Over the ensuing months, we repeatedly encouraged Jerry to pen more Sherlockian cases and, certainly, to pursue publication. The efforts have come to fruition. Jerry is pleased; his publisher is pleased; we are pleased; and we sincerely believe that you will be pleased, too. 369 pages; softback, perfect binding, cover art by the author himself.

Sherlock Holmes and the Plague of Dracula
Our reviewer said, "This is a four-star pastiche! Kudos! Cheers! Bravo!"
Then he went on to say, "There have been a number of 'Sherlock Holmes vs. Dracula' pastiches over the years, but this may be counted as one of the best. It has plot, characterizations, and it keeps one's interest from page 1. It has horror, adventure, politics and even romance. Holmes and Watson travel to Transylvania on a mission. They return to London to break up a villainous plot hatched by Dracula and Moriarty to control the financial resources of the world. Dracula appears in the story as does Professor Van Helsing, Professor Moriarty and of course, old favorites, like Inspector Lestrade. Dr. Watson's wife, Mary, becomes an integral part of the plot, too. I don't wish to give away the ending, but it is a stunner! Parts of the Final Problem and intermixed with parts of The Empty House, but with a new slant. "No one will put the book down especially during the final chapters!"
(Someone asked us recently if our reviewer ever renders a bad review. Actually, he often does, but you never hear about it because we never offer to you any books which he pans!)

Sherlock Holmes and the Chilford Ripper
A monster is loose in the normally quiet Essex town of Chilford - a fiend who has already not only murdered, but mutilated three of the town's inhabitants in the bloody style of the infamous "Jack the Ripper" for no apparent reason. Upon arriving in the picturesque country village, Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson find that a fourth brutal slaying has taken place . . . and that Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard, already on the scene, is clearly baffled! In this previously unreleased account, Watson - Holmes's loyal companion and faithful Boswell - chronicles one of the Master Detective's greatest feats of detection, as he quickly unravels a crime whose implications involve not only Chilford, but the highest levels of the British Government as well!

Sherlock Holmes and the Ghost of Baker Street
Can you imagine what it would be like to be an American emigre, fleeing the unwelcome attentions of Senator Joseph McCarthy, and taking rooms in Baker Street, only to find those chambers haunted by the ghost of Sherlock Holmes? This book offers a fresh view of Sherlock Holmes, a fascinating picture of the British film and television industry in the early 1950s, a portrait of Orson Welles (with whom the author actually worked and knew well), and a clever murder mystery. All the characters are based on real people - even Greg Hargreaves, our hero, could well be the late Cy Endfield the director of Zulu. Val Andrews wrote Sherlock Holmes pastiches for many years and has more than thirty titles to his credit. Mr. Andrews was at his best when writing about the entertainment world, in which he worked as a performer and writer for more than fifty years. Among his many other credits, Mr. Andrews had been a script writer for Tommy Cooper, Benny Hill and other comedy stars. In addition, he was well known for his biographies of famous stage magicians such as Dante, Murray, Will Goldston, Horace Goldin, Carmo, Kalanag & Chung Ling Soo. Sherlock Holmes and the Ghost of Baker Street is a soft cover book, perfect binding, and contains 156 pages.

Sherlock Holmes and the Egyptian Hall Adventure
This Sherlock Holmes adventure unites magic and mystery, and answers the question of why Houdini's coffin may be empty!
Here is another wonderful Sherlock Holmes a pastiche from the prolific pen of Val Andrews. The author has a vast knowledge of conjuring and of Sherlockiana and in this exciting mystery he is able to combine both of his lifelong interests. The Egyptian Hall, Maskelyne's theatre of mystery, forms the perfect backdrop for this the most exciting and unusual adventure ever embarked upon by the famous sleuth and his faithful Boswell, Dr Watson. The loss of an article of great value - the property of a titled lady - by a conjurer during the course of a stage trick is but the prelude to intrigue, mystery and murder most foul. But hush we can say no more ... the game is afoot! Be sure that you are fully prepared for adventure before jumping into a hansom and returning to an age when the old Queen was still upon her throne and the fogs swirled through Baker Street.

Sherlock Holmes and the Giant's Hand
Sherlock Holmes and the Giant’s Hand the first of three carefully structured stories in this collection is set in rural Victorian England and is based on a case mentioned, but not recorded, by Dr Watson. The story is a gripping murder mystery which reaches its climax in the unlikely setting of an ancient burial mound.
FYI: Matthew Booth has captured the style of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and this collection of stories has all the elements necessary to keep every reader turning the pages. He is a young writer and Clerk of the Court in a British High Court. His interest in criminology and in the Master Sleuth, Sherlock Holmes started when he was still a teenager. It is very clear that he has a bright future ahead as the author of creative Sherlockian pastiches.
