By arrangement with Kent Ross, the major honcho of the Chattanooga Gathering of Southern Sherlockians, we have been able to get a few of the pins, especially minted to commemorate the 6th annual Gathering, to offer to Sherlockian pin collectors. The Gathering of Southern Sherlockians is something of a red-letter assemblage among Sherlockian meetings. In the first place, there are very few Sherlockian organizations in the southern United States. Next, it is rare for geographically diverse groups to come together for the purpose of jointly sponsoring of a major gathering. The Chattanooga meeting is the combined effort of Atlanta's "Wisteria Lodge," Birmingham's "Genius Loci," Nashville's "Students of the Three-Pipe Problem," and Greenville's (SC) "Survivors of the Gloria Scott." For folks living in the general region of America's southeast (and everyone else, for that matter), we do want to call your attention to the 2011 meeting already scheduled for May 8-10. But, in any event, this is the first, and only, pin so far minted to commemorate a meeting of The Gathering of Southern Sherlockians. We advertise it as "a lapel pin" (and it serves that purpose nicely), but this is a really nice addition to one's adorned deerstalker - we even know a fellow in New York who bought a Boy Scout merit badge sash upon which to display his extensive Sherlockian pin collection! This pin measures about 1.5 by 1.5 inches (measured along the longest dimensions), is molded in metal with the graphics colored in baked enamel (red, white, and blue). It has a double military style pins on the back to prevent turning when worn.

Lapel Pin Collectors Attention

The good folks in Tryon have also issued their commemorative lapel pin in honor of their 2006 Sherlock Holmes/William Gillette festival. this one is taken from an actual advertising poster in which performances of Mr. Gillette's famous play "Sherlock Holmes" were advertised. The graphic on the pin shows Mr. Gillette in conversation with "Billy the Page-Boy" played by Charlie Chaplin.

We had this pin minted ourselves following a design we have had in mind for some years. It is true cloisonné 1 inch in diamater, with a polished Holmesian silhouette and the eternal announcement "Sherlock Holmes Lives!" in gold on a glossy black background and the whole thing is encircled with a fine, gold ring. The finding on the back has an extra stud to keep the pin from turning once affixed to lapel, dress, or sweater - and even though this is a pretty good photo, the pin even looks better! And the touches of white for Mr. Holmes's collar and shirt front really set this pin apart. A real "where-did-you-ever-get-that" show stopper!
