    NOTES FROM
THE STUDY IN SCARLET SHERLOCKIAN SOCIETY
    1999

The Study in Scarlet Sherlockian Society (STUD)was founded by STUDmaster emeritus, Don Izban. The Society was next managed by STUDmaster Dennis France and is now under the command of STUDmaster Allan Devitt. STUD has membership invited by the STUDmaster based on nominations from the Society's current active members. The 1999 meeting of STUD was held in Chicago's upscale cabaret, The Starlight Inn on the evening of March 5. We would like to devote this page of our web site to bringing some of the highlights of that landmark meeting. Come along with us as we relive STUD '99.

It might be interesting to note that, at the time of this writing, the temperature in Cincinnati has exceeded 90 degrees for the past week? This makes the following vistas appear quite refreshing!

    Chicago landscape in

Upon taking shelter from the balmy Chicago climate in the Starlight Inn, all the STUDs were greeted by special, custom-made STUD balloons all over the place!.

Chicago's legendary Sherlockian, Don Izban (left) presented the initial toast and the proceedings carried on in spite of a bit of tomfoolery by STUDmaster Allan Devitt and Nashville's Billy Fields.

Noted Chicago Sherlockian, Susan Diamond, advised the assemblage as to her interpretation of Dr. Watson's sexual problems. The evening's principal address was offered by Audry Hammer who gave a fascinating account of the joys and tribulations of travelling about Britain and Europe with her husband, David Hammer, as he collected data for his famous Sherlockian "travel" books.

In spite of the other-than-ideal weather, STUD '99 turned out to be a gathering place for Sherlockians from all over the place!

Awaiting seating at their respective tables, here are (left to right) Chicago's Fred and Sunny Levin and Nashville's Billy Fields and Jim (The Hawk) Hawkins.
Chicago's Sherlockian magician, Elliott Black, chats with Bill and Lynda Conway from Pittsburgh.
Don Curtis, (left) THE Illustrious Client of The Illustrious Clients of Indianapolis awaits the sumptuous STUD dinner with Gordon Speck from Waterloo, IL. Gordon is a driving force with Du Quoin, IL's scion society,The Occupants of the Empty House.
Gael and Susan Stahl with Billy Fields - Nashville's Scholars of the Three Pipe Problem is well represented! Susan Diamond passes in the background.

    And the dinner!!

(Served at ". . . a quarter past seven" as suggested in GREE.)

    Get this!!

    Avogolemeno Soup
    Limestone Lettuce and Tomato Salad
Prime Rib of Beef (or, if one preferred, Breast of Chicken)
    Double Baked Potato
    Broccoli Spears
    Baby Carrots
    followed by

    Strawberry Shortcake

(a great treat on a cold, snowy evening)

Then there was the piece de resistance
    THE ANNUAL STUD CAKE!!

For us, the high point of the evening came when our buddy, Jim Hawkins, was initated as a member of STUD! Here is Jim displaying his new STUD membership mug and badge.
    Congratulations, Jim!
Jim is the listmaster of Sherlockians on Line, internet list. It is a great group of friendly and interesting Sherlockians. Folks who want further information about joining Sherlockians on Line, are urged to e-mail Jim Hawkins

We are looking forward to STUD 2000! We do hope that
the weather is a bit better, though!
