The Study in Scarlet Sherlockian Society Meeting
May 2, 2003!

It could be the famous singing group, "The Shabooms!" But it isn't. It's only (L-R) Gord Shriver, Henry Zecher, Gay Zecher, Carolyn Senter, and Joel Senter joyous attendees at the 2003 meeting of The Study in Scarlet Sherlockian Society (commonly known as STUD)

The Venue!
Sheraton Four Points in lovely downtown Schiller Park IL

The Gathering

Ed and Bobbie Letwenko provide essential services behind the registration desk. Toledo's Tom Biblewski signs in. Foreground (L-R) Susan Diamond and Julie McKuras

Each STUD and guest was advised of the entire weekend's activities with marvelous "order of service" booklets produced by Bill and Lynda Conway. On the left is the schedule of events for the entire weekend; on the right is the menu for the evenings repast. Please notice that the Conways exerted a considerable amount of their scholarly talent by "annotating" each and every line of the schedule and menu with a direct reference from The Canon! Those folks lucky enough to have been given one of these booklets have a real collectors' item!

STUDs and guests mill around a bit (especially around the open bar generously provided by the host and hostess), socializing, conversing, partaking of excellent hors d'oeuvres and finally settling down to an excellent dinner featuring Breast of Chicken & Filet with Champagne Sauce, baked potato, steamed vegetables, topped off with hazelnut ice cream (chocolate sauce), coffee and the pièce de résistance, the annual STUD cake

The Program

Elyse Locurto, ASH and Paul Singleton wow the audience with their rendition of an original Sherlockian song.

After which, Paul Singleton, "rolls
them in the aisles" with a hilarious Bob Newhart-esque telephone conversation with Christopher Morley in which he tries to understand the intricacies of "The (Sherlockian) Game."

(Left) STUDMaster, Allan Devitt, presides over STUD 2003
(Right) STUD founder, Don Izban, gives the evening's feature toast in his own inimitable musical way.
[It was asked, what would STUD be without Don Izban? One attendee suggested, "A lot shorter." (Don is known for his loquacious toasts!)]

Just a Few of the Many Sherlockian
Celebrities Present

Our nominees (L - R) Henry Zecher, Gord Shriver, and David Milner received their STUD mugs and pins and are now properly invested members of The Study in Scarlet Sherlockian Society. Congratulations, gentlemen! Henry is an acknowledged expert on William Gillette and author of a forthcoming book, entitled, Elementary, My Dear Watson, the Life and Times of William Gillette. Gord is a member of the Atlanta scion, Confederates of Wisteria Lodge and, indeed, is a past Gasogene of that illustrious group. David is Ship's Purser of the Greenville, SC scion, Survivors of the Gloria Scott and editor of that group's publication, "The Gaslight Gazette." Among their many activities, the Survivors of the Gloria Scott seek out and honor Sherlockians whose triumphs over personal adversity have made them real "survivors."

How did this great STUD meeting go?
Well, only one fight broke out.
Hotel Security was called.
But no arrests were made.
All in all, a very successful evening!
Many thanks to Gord Shriver and Henry Zecher for the use of their photographs on this web page.
