This is a graphic we have been wanting to do for some time.
Our artist, Gerald Stratton, had created this composite consisting
of one of the designs we purchased, some years ago, from Tom
Rieschick combined with a paraphrase of René Descartes' self-convincing
proof of his own existence, "I think, therefore I am"
(Cogito ergo sum*). We are most grateful to our fellow
Cincinnatian, and good Sherlockian friend, Dan Andriacco, for
his coaching in the identification of the proper third person
perfect tense of the Latin verb cogitare (to think) so
that we could have Holmes saying, "He (Doyle) thought
therefore I am." (Our own Latin is more than a little
rusty!)We thought that this graphic would lend a certain je
ne sais quoi to what might otherwise be quite ordinary wearing
apparel, hence, the good folks at CafePress have created for
us a T-shirts (click
here to see) and sweatshirts (click
here to see) bearing this graphic. We like it
and that's why we (and Dan Andriacco) quite often wear our "cogitavit"
sweatshirts and T-shirts. What do you think your Sherlockian
friends will say when they see you wearing your own "cogitavit"
shirt?
*Some authorities have said the Decartes quotation is actually,
"Dubito, ergo cogito, ergo sum" (I doubt, therefore
I think, therefore I am), but the quotation is most often cited
as simply "cogito ergo sum."
